Explore foods and drinks that are good and bad for teeth. Taste test items that are good for teeth. Create new snacks and recipes. Discuss the importance of eating three meals and only two snacks per day.

Create a Treat

Use dental themed cookie cutters to make the following: cookies, rice crispy treats, Jell-O jigglers, pancakes, or even sandwiches.

Edible Toothbrush

Use celery and string cheese. Celery represents the toothbrush, cut up the string cheese and stuff into celery to simulate toothpaste. Discuss why this is a healthy snack and the importance of tooth brushing.

Apple-Marshmallow Mouth

Ingredients:

  • Smooth peanut butter. In case of a peanut allergy, use one of the following: Wow butter, Almond, Pumpkin or Sunflower Seed butter
  • 1 red apple, cored and sliced into eighths
  • Miniature marshmallows
  • Lemon juice

Instructions:

While making the “mouth”, discuss how food affects teeth. Ask/explain why the apple is an everyday food while the marshmallows are a sometimes treat. Discuss other healthy and sometime food and drink options. Describe the number of teeth we have as a child/adult and how to keep them healthy.

  • Spread butter on one side of each apple slice – if needed use lemon juice to keep apple from turning brown.
  • Place four miniature marshmallows on one apple slice and then lay another apple slice, butter side down, on top.
